Tumpak Sewu, also known as Coban Sewu, is a breathtaking tiered waterfall located on the border of Pronojiwo District in Lumajang Regency and Ampelgading District in Malang Regency, East Java, Indonesia. Towering above this natural wonder is Mount Semeru, an active volcano and the highest mountain on the island of Java. The Glidik River, which originates from the slopes of Semeru, serves as the primary water source for the waterfall.

The name Tumpak Sewu translates to "A Thousand Waterfalls" in the Javanese language, aptly describing its stunning visual effect—a massive semicircular cascade where multiple streams appear to pour down simultaneously, creating a mesmerizing curtain of water.

Tourist Destination and Accessibility

Tumpak Sewu is one of East Java’s most popular tourist destinations, drawing large crowds, especially on weekends. While infrastructure improvements have made access easier, reaching the main waterfall still requires a physically demanding trek. The descent into the main box canyon can take approximately an hour and includes steep, slippery paths, bamboo ladders, and river crossings, making the journey both challenging and adventurous.

Visiting in the early morning allows for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, enhancing the experience. During the rainy season (November to March), the water flow becomes stronger, but the trails can be more dangerous due to increased slipperiness and the risk of flash floods.
